Driving home
56Driving home
Looking at the road signs. They're still not familiar. The darkness is closing slowly about the car, and the fog makes it seem as though it's been dark forever. Like It is in winter in the north pole, but I swear that even the north pole would look more familiar than this. I'm in an empty stretch of countryside god knows where. Somewhere not to far south of the north by now I would hope. Angry lorries and buzzing cars charge past innocent trees. Trees that have stood for years ,that didn't choose to have the M1's harsh tongue lashing past the hills on their doorstep. Or whichever road this is. But this isn't an article about trees, or motorways for that matter, because that would be boring. This is an article about going home.
I feel very well qualified in this topic. I seem to spend my life driving home. Or packing suitcases to leave again, there we are, my next article "all about suitcases", sounds a little dull doesn't it? I'm using too many commas, ignore them please because it's just too hard to delete them whilst writing on an iPod. An iPod is, incidentally, the perfect travel companion. Although it does sometimes worry me that I prefer the company of a small metal contraption to that of an actual human being. But which human can play hundreds of songs an hour tirelessly and provide a handy notepad feature? Anyway I suppose that I had better get back to the topic.
One of the disadvantages to this jet-set lifestyle of mine (I thought I'd try sounding posh and exotic there) is that there is never any Internet. Mind you I suppose that that is just an opinion, I mean if I had access to Facebook at this point do you really think I'd find the time to write such an interesting and entertaining piece of literature? (a bit of self advertising will never go amiss.) My blackberry does connect to the Internet, but only when it feels like it really. At places thatI am meant to have no connection at all, the wifi works perfectly. But the annoying contraption has taken a definate dislike to my wifi at home. You can probably imagine by now how much it enjoys finding networks whilst on the road (although I know that this is a hard task to ask of it.) The phone used to be quite good at connecting to the Internet using its signal, but I think I killed that feature with my many hours of social media and futile attempt to watch something on the BBC IPlayer. that was probably my fault to be honest. Anyway back to Facebook on the go. I really wish that there was someway to connect my iPod with the Internet on the go. Oooohhhh I love this song. Sorry just a second. I probably shouldn't be listening to music whilst writing, god I'm easily sidetracked, imagine how I am with proper work...
Other than lack of socialising for whole hours at a time (!) traveling does have other negative points. I can't stand the boredom. End of. Cars are boring. And however entertaining a decent book can be for a few hours there comes a point (I think I have already mentioned that this happened about an hour ago to me) where the light starts to fade. For ten minutes I try to strain and peer through the obscurity but sooner or later the time comes, especially with the jolting of the car adding to the problem, that the ink on the page becomes a blurred mess of lines and circle (or is that just my peculiar vision?) at this point I resort to listening to music, but I'm bored easily and an hour or two later I need a new occupation, this is where hubpages comes in. But I suppose if you don't have access to writing stuff, or this bores you too (which I can quite believe by now!) then here is the top five travel boredom curing gadgets (at the bottom below the writing)
Still an hour by car and then another forty minutes in another car, I'm afraid this article may go on for quite a while... I have my earphones in though I don't know why because I turned the music off so that I didn't get side tracked (like that'd work) I think that it's partially so that I can look hardcore (a fail, I know) and partially as an excuse not to talk to anyone, I'm not a fan of small talk with half deaf relatives who are busy driving cars. Mmmmmmm I forgot to mention, we just stopped for coffee at a crappy "American diner." but I don't see the point in fermented bitter beans so I has the usual; hot chocolate on the rocks. It was okay but compared with the last service station (that served it with marshmallows, cream, AND a flake (!!! Made my day)) it was a bit of a letdown. But the cream on the top was in a pretty pattern. I'd hate to think of how many calories I consume in chocolate related products on the whole, it'd have my GP in a coma, but I need the energy for... Erm... Writing. There's dedication, I risk a heart attack every day for you readers. I still haven't mentioned my hot chocolate tour of great Britain yet! It's progressing well and I will no doubt write an article about it when I'm not too busy ranting about trees and chocolate and when I have drunk enough... Experiments.
To get back to the topic on hand I'm meant to be writing about the issues faced by regular travellers and driving home in general. But the silence is killing me, just gimme a second and I'll put some music on. Ahhhh that's better. So where was I? Ohh yeah, I was going to talk about the fact that this journey is getting me out of doing any work; which is ace and epic at the same time!!!
I am sure that I have an essay due in tomorrow or something (I haven't checked, because I'm sensible like that) but its 7pm now and I have a good hour of travelling left. Oh well, what a shame. There we are, an advantage of driving places in the dead of night, you don't have to do any work! But I'm so dead tomorrow.
Another advantage of travelling, um errrr, it's hot and stuffy and I was sick of the other people in this car before we even set off, tricky question, give tme a sec. I know, it gets you places. That's a bit obvious, get in a car and you can to someplace, but think of all of the possibilities. In this day and age with half a tank of petrol and a Bit of imagination you can go anywhere you want. I know this, because in a few days I'm off to Paris by coach, then off to the apps in a sports car (it's worth saying that I am neither loaded or paying for this trip) so the whole world is being opened up to me by a few gears and an engine at the moment. You could visit Spain or china or America (yeah that involves a boat too but that's small details) so here's some links for holiday books so that you can plan your own escape (at the bottom of the page as well). Because I'm generous enough to do all of the hard work for you :)
It's so dark, and I have a headache, And I'm listening to rock music (told you I'm sensible) it is sort of pretty though, on the way out here there was snow on the ground and frost in the trees and it was stunningly beautiful, even from the roadside. So while all that's gone I think that the night has its own kind of beauty. There is a hint of orange on he horizon from a million headlights and the bridges on the motorway seem almost to pounce upon passing cars. I had to include that, because I'm an undiscovered novelist really and can't go a minute with out writing atmospheric pros :D you might get used to it...
Anyway I guess ill just end up ranting if I keep going any longer. The real challenge starts here, I have to get this off notepad and on to hubpages, wish me up and if this is up and running give me a mini round of applause... Thank you very much. :D that wasn't very "driving home" orientated if I'm honest, but it gave me something to do and hey, if you enjoyed it or learned something from it free high fives!
